The “Ruby” Cherries That Didn’t Get Mushy
How We Helped a Cherry Exporter Ship “Rubies” Without the Soggy Mess
Recently, we worked closely with a long-term premium cherry exporter, and ultimately we solved his biggest problem. His cherries are like bright rubies; in addition, they look beautiful and have high value. However, during the long 30-day ocean cold-chain transportation, the boxes often became wet and soft. Not only did the damp and damaged cartons directly squeeze and hurt the fruit, but also they greatly reduced the value of these “ruby-like” cherries. As a result, this caused great profit losses for the exporter.
To solve this problem completely, we first communicated closely with the client and discussed the issue many times. Then, we fully considered the special needs of cherry exports, and subsequently we built a full-process quality protection plan.Specifically, the plan covers carton materials, structure design, printing technology, and packaging and transportation. Moreover, every detail of the plan focuses on moisture resistance, damage prevention, and freshness protection.
First of all, we chose materials very strictly, and this thus built the first protection line for transportation. Cherries are valuable and delicate; therefore, they are easy to be bruised.Besides, they are stacked in large quantities for export, so the bottom cartons must bear heavy pressure. For this reason, we specially used stronger corrugated paper, such as BC flute or EB flute. In this way, we ensure that cartons stay firm and do not collapse even when stacked over 2.5 meters high. Consequently, we can avoid fruit damage caused by box deformation.
At the same time, we also thought about the special conditions of cold-chain transport. When cherries are taken out of cold storage and meet normal temperature, a lot of condensation water forms. If the carton absorbs water, it will become soft easily. So, we treated the surface of the materials with lamination or varnish. As a result, this effectively blocks water and keeps the box strong and straight throughout the transportation process.
Second, we refined the structure design, and meanwhile we balanced freshness and practicality. Cherries are fresh fruit, so they need to “breathe” during transport. If ventilation is poor, CO₂ will build up inside the box, and eventually it will cause the fruit to go bad. Therefore, from the early design stage, we integrated scientific ventilation concepts into the carton design. We also made sure the edges of the materials are smooth and the ventilation holes are in the right place. This not only allows good air flow, but also stops the edges of the holes from scratching the fruit.
In addition, to improve brand trust and support product traceability, we added a special QR code area on the carton. Through this QR code, it can clearly show key information such as the orchard origin and harvest date of the cherries. Thus, this makes overseas buyers feel safe and confident when purchasing. For the color matching, we used deep red and gold. On the one hand, this matches the “ruby” look of cherries; on the other hand, it shows a high-end quality, so it is perfect for the positioning of export gift sets.
When it comes to printing and processing, we kept improving, and at the same time we paid close attention to both appearance and durability. The cherry red, is the key brand identifier of the client. To ensure that all carton batches have the same color and avoid color differences, we took special measures. Because if the color is not right, customers may doubt the freshness of the fruit. Therefore, we used spot color printing with Pantone colors instead of common CMYK printing. As a result, this restores the bright color of fresh cherries as much as possible.
Furthermore, to fight against the condensation problem in cold chains, we added UV printing or lamination on the printed surface. This not only makes the carton look more premium, but also prevents ink from fading or smudging due to friction in wet conditions. Eventually, this keeps the box in a good appearance during transportation.
Besides, we controlled every detail during production and packaging, and thus we eliminated all possible risks. For example, in the paper mounting process, we used high-viscosity moisture-proof glue. This stops the carton from separating, bubbling or falling apart when cherries move in and out of cold storage. After that, after die-cutting, we cleaned the ventilation holes carefully.Since cherry cartons have many ventilation holes, we must remove all paper scraps. If there are leftover scraps, they can pollute the fruit and block ventilation, and in turn this will affect cherry freshness. Then, in the box folding process, we used low-temperature resistant glue. Because it fits the cold environment of cold-chain transport, the box stays tightly glued. Finally, professional workers packed and loaded the containers in a standard way. They controlled every detail, so every batch of goods is shipped neatly and safely.
Eventually, our hard work paid off, and our full-process protection plan achieved great results. When the client received the goods, he immediately praised the neat and standard loading. Later, when the cherries arrived at their Asian destination, the client called us excitedly. He told us that every box of cherries stayed as fresh as when they left the orchard. My cherries finally have the decent packaging they deserve. Because of this quality and trust, my sales have increased steadily.
